The number of referrals to the Children’s Mental Health Center has surged by 160 percent since 2020, with current monthly referrals averaging around 135, up from 51. This significant increase has resulted in longer waiting times for services, with some individuals facing a wait of up to two years.

The center, managed by the capital area’s healthcare system, provides support to children nationwide dealing with mental health and developmental issues. Anna Sigríður Pálsdóttir, the chief physician at the center, highlights various factors contributing to this rise, including social media influencing children’s outdoor playtime and the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. She notes that the pandemic placed everyone in a challenging situation, and various societal pressures may also be at play.

While there are efforts underway to address this alarming trend, including additional funding and hiring new staff, the center is struggling to keep up with the growing demand. Anna Sigríður emphasizes the critical condition, stating, “This is truly an overwhelming situation.”

Currently, waiting times vary by department, but some are extending to two years, severely limiting access to necessary support for those in need. There are hopes that new welfare legislation will alleviate some of these challenges, aiming to improve the overall mental health service landscape for children and adolescents in the country.
