Norwegian politician pledges donation after legal case dropped
A Norwegian member of parliament from the socialist Red Party (Rødt) has announced he will donate 10,000 kroner (approx. €870) to charity after prosecutors dropped a case against him for alleged threatening behaviour.
Mímir Kristjánsson, a representative in Norway’s Storting, wrote on Facebook that he felt compelled to pay a “kind of fine” for his actions, despite the case being dismissed, Dagbladet reports.
“Once again: I am deeply ashamed that I sent those messages, and I have no desire to get off lightly,” Kristjánsson wrote. “Donating to Ønsketransporten [a charity providing transport for vulnerable individuals] is at least a small contribution from me that might feel somewhat useful.”
The case against Kristjánsson, who was reported to police in early April for allegedly threatening a man in his 60s, was shelved by prosecutors last week. In his statement, the politician reiterated his regret over the incident.
Ønsketransporten is a non-profit organisation that offers transport services to people in difficult life situations where public services fall short, according to its description on the website of Frivillighet Norge (Volunteering Norway).
