Tourism has become one of the Faroe Islands’ largest export sectors, now ranking as the third-biggest after fishing and aquaculture, national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

According to newly released 2025 figures from Visit Faroe Islands, the industry generated 1.4 billion Danish kroner in export value last year. The growth has been driven in part by a workforce where the majority of positions are held by women, aligning with the gender distribution in the country’s other key export industries.

“Tourism fits well alongside our traditional export sectors,” said Jógvan Jákupsson of Visit Faroe Islands, speaking at an industry event in Havn this week. The remarks follow recent data showing tourism’s rapid expansion, challenging the Faroese reliance on fisheries—long summed up by the local saying, “Faroese live off fish, we say.”
