Faroese transport authority’s funding plans called unrealistic by economic council chair
The Faroese government’s long-term transport infrastructure plan lacks credible funding sources, according to the chair of the Economic Council, who described the revenue projections as “birds in the sky.”
Johnny í Grótinum, chair of the Economic Council (Búskaparráðnum), criticised the transport authority’s proposal in an interview with Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya. He argued that while the plan outlines major expenditures—including the Suðuroy Tunnel and campus development projects—it provides little detail on how these will be financed.
“The idea that the transport authority can secure an 8% budget increase over the next decade is unrealistic,” í Grótinum stated. “If they proceed with these projects, there won’t be enough left for anything else.”
His comments follow broader scrutiny of the transport plan’s financial viability, with other political figures also questioning its fiscal grounding.
