KVF reports that the Health Authority has urged the Health and Energy Ministry to update the law governing tanning beds used for cosmetic purposes.

Health Authority director Noomi Oddmarsdóttir Gregersen pointed to the serious risks associated with tanning-bed use. The authority’s recommendation cites several studies concluding that tanning-bed use can cause cancer.

“UV rays are carcinogenic, and when we tan, the amount is so high that it becomes dangerous. We want this message to reach children and young people. If you use tanning beds at a young age, there is a much greater risk of developing cancer later in life,” Gregersen said.
