A small primary school in Trøð, Faroe Islands, is prioritising hands-on learning to nurture children’s innate curiosity, despite limited space and resources, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

“There’s so much energy here, and we work to strengthen that energy in the children,” said Fríðbjørg Sunadóttir Fríðheim, the school’s headteacher, during a visit to a classroom where young pupils were building a model of the solar system. “Even the youngest children in first and second grade already know so much about it—it’s incredibly engaging.”

The school, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, currently teaches around 70 students divided into 20 small groups, some with as few as one pupil. Due to space constraints, storage rooms and other areas have been repurposed as classrooms. When asked if there is room for all who want to enrol, Sunadóttir Fríðheim acknowledged the challenge: “The short answer is no. The longer answer is that we try to find solutions through cooperation with various committees, councils, and other partners.”

Anniversary events, including performances and discussions, are planned to mark the school’s half-century milestone.
