Oulu railway station renovation to improve passenger routes and safety
Oulu’s railway station, which serves around 1.4 million passengers annually, is undergoing a major renovation to enhance accessibility and safety, with completion expected by December 2029, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.
The project includes constructing two new platforms, elevators, and two pedestrian underpasses to separate cyclists from train passengers. Currently, passengers accessing platforms 2 and 3 must share an underpass with cyclists, but after renovations, this route will be reserved exclusively for bicycles.
The €30 million renovation, a joint effort by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and the City of Oulu, aims to accommodate growing passenger numbers. The station’s car train terminal will be temporarily closed until autumn as part of the first phase, which also involves relocating it 200 metres south and upgrading electrical and safety systems.
In the second phase, platforms 2 and 3 will be modernised, and two new platforms (4 and 5) will be built. Construction is planned to minimise disruptions, ensuring smooth train operations throughout the project.
“The goal is to make it easier for people to board and exit trains,” said Jouko Aaramaa, a bridge construction supervisor from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s consultant Welado.
