The Helsinki District Court has begun hearing a case against two former employees of the Finnish charity Hope, accused of embezzling nearly €30,000 worth of food gift cards intended for struggling families, Yle reports.

The defendants, who worked for the well-known nonprofit, allegedly misused gift cards donated by private individuals for low-income households. According to investigators, the cards—valued at €30 and €50 each—were used by the employees themselves. Both have admitted to wrongdoing during the pre-trial phase and expressed remorse.

The case came to light in 2023 when a family in need attempted to use a gift card provided by Hope, only to find it already spent. The charity subsequently filed a police report, leading to the dismissal of the employees involved. While Hope initially described the financial scale of the misuse as minor, police later confirmed the total value of embezzled cards approached €30,000, affecting thousands intended for vulnerable households.
