The Faroese freezing trawler Vesturhavið is en route to Flemish Cap as fishing activity intensifies in the region, reports Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
Five freezing trawlers are currently operating near Iceland, with two more near the Faroe Islands. One vessel is off East Greenland, while Vesturhavið is now sailing toward Flemish Cap, where another Faroese trawler, Tvey Liggja, is already fishing.
The Faroese Fish Market (Fiskamarknaðurin) expects a significant increase in landings this week, citing strong fishing conditions despite variable weather. “The current is good,” the report states.
Elsewhere, a deep-sea trawler is working the Iceland Ridge, targeting species like Greenland halibut and other deep-water fish. Six pair trawlers are active, along with one single trawler and two longliners, which are fishing for Greenland halibut with “usable catches,” according to the market report.
