Finnish Land Survey Authority utilizes drones to assist berry pickers in locating blueberries
The Finnish Land Survey Authority aims to assist berry pickers in locating prime blueberry spots. A significant portion of wild berries remain unpicked due to the difficulty of finding the most fruitful patches. The Authority’s research utilizes drones, laser scanning, geospatial data, and image-based machine vision techniques. Based on the gathered information, artificial intelligence models are being developed to create berry maps. Previous mapping efforts have been conducted in Ilomantsi, and this summer, in Espoo’s Nuuksio region.
According to the collected data, it is estimated that less than one percent of Finland’s berry locations are the most productive. In the future, the Land Survey Authority plans to expand its research to include lingonberries and cloudberries. Additionally, this summer, Finland has witnessed the launch of other applications designed to assist in finding blueberry locations.
