Former US president Donald Trump declared in a late-night address that Iran “is no longer a threat” and claimed American war objectives in the region were “nearly achieved,” but minutes later, oil prices surged as he threatened to escalate actions against Tehran.

The remarks, delivered in a televised speech early Thursday, came as global markets reacted to the mixed signals on US-Iran relations. Trump did not specify what measures would be taken.
