Centre Party supports more liberal abortion law following German model
The Faroese Centre Party will not reverse the country’s recently expanded abortion law and may support further liberalisation based on the German system, party leader Jenis av Rana confirmed on Tuesday.
Speaking to public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya, Rana said ongoing coalition negotiations would not affect the party’s stance on the issue. He indicated openness to adopting elements of Germany’s abortion framework, which permits terminations up to 14 weeks if the woman demonstrates she has received counselling and information about social and financial support alternatives.
The Faroese parliament approved a new abortion law before Christmas, extending the legal limit to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The legislation passed with broad cross-party support.
