Police rule out link between Helsinki homicide suspect and 2022 Vantaa postal worker murder
Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (KRP) has confirmed that the suspect in a fatal stabbing in Helsinki’s Malminkartano district is not connected to the unsolved 2022 murder of a postal worker in Vantaa’s Myyrmäki, Yle reports.
Forensic comparisons of DNA evidence from both cases showed no match, according to KRP’s lead investigator, Detective Chief Superintendent Olli Töyräs. Authorities had previously explored a potential link due to similarities in how the crimes were carried out.
“The Malminkartano homicide was also an unexpected, motiveless attack on a stranger—elements that resemble the Myyrmäki postal worker murder,” Töyräs told Yle. The geographical proximity of the two locations had also raised police interest.
A 26-year-old man remains in custody as the prime suspect in the Malminkartano case, where an approximately 80-year-old man was stabbed on March 18. Helsinki Police are leading that investigation, describing the attack as particularly brutal, involving extreme violence and a bladed weapon.
Meanwhile, KRP continues its probe into the Myyrmäki murder, reviewing potential suspects through timelines, location data, telecom records, and forensic samples. Töyräs noted that while recent tips have emerged, no arrests or formal interrogations have taken place.
“We’re conducting quiet investigative work,” he said. “All leads are being followed up.”
The bureau is also monitoring other violent crimes in the Helsinki metropolitan area for possible connections, collaborating with local police as needed.
