Faroe Islands coalition talks begin between three largest parties

Leaders of the Faroese Union Party, Union Party, and Social Democratic Party launched formal coalition negotiations on Monday, reports Faroese national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The three party chairs met at the offices of the Tórshavn Workers’ Association to start discussions on forming a new government. Beinir Johannesen, leader of the Union Party, is heading the talks after holding preliminary meetings with all parliamentary groups last week.

Johannesen told public radio earlier this year that he aims to establish a coalition among the three largest parties, arguing the Faroe Islands need stable governance in the coming years amid significant challenges. The Union Party has not previously participated in the national unity agreements formed by the other two parties.

Johannesen expressed optimism that a joint solution could be found, including with the Union Party.
