A Ukrainian drone crashed near a family home in Kouvola, southeastern Finland, on Sunday, bringing the war closer to local residents, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

Seppo Yli-Kiikka, whose property was near the crash site, expressed shock at the incident. “If it had hit the house, it would have been destroyed,” he told Yle, referring to the drone’s potential combat payload.

His son, Vili Yli-Kiikka, described the situation as tense but said he did not feel fear. “I didn’t see anything, just heard fighter jets flying over in the morning,” he said.

Another local resident, Päivi Kähkönen, said the war now felt “concretely close” after the drone crash. “We’re used to military aircraft since the Utti Jaeger Regiment’s helicopters fly overhead, but this was unusually heavy activity,” she said, adding that she initially assumed it was a drill.

Sini Karhu, the family’s mother, said she trusted Finland’s ability to counter drone threats, citing NATO membership and nearby military bases. “With Utti and Vekara [garrison] close by, we can quickly get protection,” she said.

Finnish authorities confirmed two drones crashed in the Kouvola area on Sunday, with one identified as a Ukrainian AN-196 model.
