A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for causing a fatal crash in Tampere, Finland, after driving at excessive speeds, Pirkanmaa District Court ruled on Monday, according to a report by Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

The September 2024 incident in the Kalkku district resulted in the death of a 16-year-old passenger when the car, traveling over 170 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, veered off a roundabout and struck a tree. Two other passengers suffered severe injuries. All occupants were wearing seatbelts.

The convicted driver, identified as Arvin Daniel Esmail, was found guilty of manslaughter, two counts of attempted manslaughter, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, driving without a license, and drug offenses. He had been banned from driving at the time of the crash.

Prosecutors argued that the driver must have foreseen the likelihood of a fatal outcome when exceeding speed limits so drastically in an urban area. While Esmail denied the manslaughter charges—admitting only to aggravated vehicular homicide and grievous bodily harm—one of the three judges dissented, stating the evidence did not prove intentional killing.

The ruling is not yet final; appeals may be filed with the Court of Appeal. Manslaughter convictions in fatal traffic collisions remain rare in Finland.

In addition to the deceased, the car carried the driver’s acquaintance and two other boys unknown to him prior to the incident.
