Polar low to bring intense snow and wind to northern Norway overnight
A fast-moving polar low is expected to hit parts of Troms and Vesterålen between midnight and 1 a.m. Friday, bringing heavy snow and near-gale winds, meteorologists warn.
Norway’s Dagbladet reports that the Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued a yellow weather alert for the region, with duty meteorologist Johanne Ordahl describing the system as “short but intense.” Conditions are forecast to ease by late Friday morning.
“Many will face a brisk commute in what we call ‘shaky spring weather,’ with possible storm conditions and heavy snow showers,” Ordahl told the newspaper Thursday evening. She noted that while Friday afternoon would see the low weaken, the evening could bring thunderstorms to coastal areas of Vestland county.
Further south, Trøndelag will see mixed conditions over the weekend, with sleet, snow, and occasional sun. Eastern Norway is set to be the “weather winner,” with clear skies Saturday and only light rain Sunday evening. Meanwhile, mountainous regions are expected to remain grey and wet throughout the weekend.
Northern areas, including Nordland, Troms, and Finnmark, may see brief sunshine over the weekend after Friday’s unsettled weather clears.
