A long-stalled housing development in Húsalánsgrunnin has become a key point of contention among Faroese political parties ahead of the upcoming elections, as leaders clashed over its future in a televised debate on Tuesday evening.
According to a report by Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya, the Union Party (Sambandsflokkurin) and People’s Party (Fólkaflokkurin) argued that the state should limit its role to supporting the existing housing market. Meanwhile, the Republic (Tjóðveldi), Self-Government Party (Sjálvstýrisflokkurin), and New Self-Government Party (Javnaarflokkurin) backed proposals for an alternative funding model to revive the project.
The debate featured party leaders Beinir Johannesen, Bárður á Steig Nielsen, Aksel V. Johannesen, Sámal Petur í Grund, Sirið Stenberg, Ruth Vang, and Jenis av Rana. The discussion centred on whether to reintroduce state-led housing initiatives similar to those in place until the turn of the century or to maintain the current market-driven approach.
The Húsalánsgrunnin area, once a focus of public housing policy, has remained undeveloped for years, with parties now divided over how—or whether—to restart construction.
