Hamina theater cancels remaining performances of “Loma” musical due to internal disputes
The remaining performances of the “Loma” musical in Hamina’s summer theater production have been canceled due to internal disputes within the theater’s associated organization. The cancellations were first announced late Monday night via the theater’s Facebook page. Sanna Vapalahti, the chairperson of the Hamina Theater Association, confirmed the cancellations.
According to Vapalahti, disagreements within the board have been ongoing since spring. She emphasized that the disputes are primarily administrative rather than artistic, stemming from long-standing issues, including concerns over casting decisions. Some actors have felt that decisions are made within an overly limited group. On Monday, after a tumultuous meeting, a number of members and actors staged a walkout.
“I don’t believe it’s possible to continue the performances in this situation,” Vapalahti stated. However, she expressed hope that the theater’s activities will resume normally in the fall.
There were five performances remaining, with the next one scheduled for today, Tuesday. Vapalahti was not part of the walkout and does not perform in the production. The Facebook post regarding the cancellations was created by those who left the meeting.
Tickets purchased through Lippu.fi will be refunded through that service. Those who bought tickets by other means can contact the theater via email. Vapalahti has already begun responding to inquiries this morning.
The Hamina Theater Association aims to promote theater activities in Hamina and its surrounding communities. The “Loma” musical is based on Risto Jarva’s 1970s comedy film of the same name.
