The Marienlyst athletics track in Drammen has become a source of frustration for users like Cato Thunes, who lament the presence of individuals engaging in illegal activities. Thunes, an avid runner, has witnessed an alarming increase in vandalism, including the dangerous act of setting fire to foam cartridges, which has resulted in debris, including shattered glass, littering the track.

Thunes expresses his discontent, stating that spending significant time cleaning the area detracts from his enjoyment of athletics. He worries not just about safety but also the negative impact on local families and children who use the facility. “It’s disappointing to see people doing drugs and drinking there, especially when we have to deal with their mess,” he says.

He confirms that the disturbances often occur while local runners are training. Just recently, he encountered individuals visibly intoxicated and using drugs in the facilities while he and other runners were present. His concerns extend to the potential for escalating violence among youths, referencing a recent incident where a person brandished a knife near the Drammen Hall.

Geir Oustorp, head of the preventive department at the local police, acknowledges the ongoing issues at Marienlyst, attributing its popularity among those seeking to evade detection to its central location in Drammen. He mentions that while the police strive to maintain a presence, they recognize the need for enhanced measures.

Thunes proposes solutions such as improved lighting and surveillance cameras to deter vandalism and anti-social behavior. Oustorp agrees that collaboration with local authorities and clubs is essential to ensure the facilities are safe and well-utilized. Both emphasize the importance of community involvement in reclaiming the area for positive activities.
