Two of Faroe Islands’ smallest polling stations open with low early turnout
Two of the Faroe Islands’ smallest polling stations opened on Tuesday in the villages of Oyndarfjørður and Hellurnar, with only a handful of voters appearing by midday, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
In Hellurnar, where just 10 residents hold voting rights, only four had cast ballots by noon. The polling place is set up in the village’s prayer house, a tradition maintained for years, according to Jórun Eið Johannesen, the local election official.
Neighbouring Oyndarfjørður, with 108 eligible voters, saw 26 ballots submitted by the same time. The village is widely known from a song by Niels Midjord, based on a poem by Gunnleifur Thomsen.
Both communities are among the Faroe Islands’ least populous polling districts.
