The Faroese representatives in the Danish parliament, the Folketing, have significantly less influence than in previous years, historian Hans Andrias Sølvará told Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The shift began around the turn of the century, when the Faroese parliament, the Løgting, took over key policy areas—including education and public language use—reducing the need for Folketing intervention. Today, much of Faroese legislation is handled domestically.

As a result, Faroese MPs in the Folketing now focus on securing Danish state funding for various Faroese projects, such as cultural institutions and research initiatives, which are not directly tied to Danish lawmaking.

“They spend considerable time and effort finding funds in the Danish budget for different Faroese ventures,” Sølvará said, noting that these tasks were not originally part of their core parliamentary duties.
