105-year-old Danish woman determined to vote as long as she can walk or crawl
A 105-year-old Danish woman has declared she will continue voting in elections for as long as she is physically able, even if it means crawling to the polling station.
Lis Vestergaard, who has voted in every election since 1945, told DR that casting her ballot remains a fundamental duty. “I will vote as long as I can walk or crawl,” she said, emphasising that democracy depends on participation.
Vestergaard, who turned 105 in March, recalled the first time she voted in 1945, shortly after Denmark’s liberation from Nazi occupation. “It was a very special feeling,” she said. “We had been through so much, and suddenly we could have a say again.”
Despite her age, she remains politically engaged, following debates and reading newspapers daily. “I may be old, but my brain still works,” she said. “And as long as it does, I will use my voice.”
