Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has criticised public discussion about the funeral of five victims in the Vantaa Pähkinärinne fire, calling the debate “completely inappropriate,” Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.

Speaking in parliament, Orpo said it was unacceptable to comment on such matters during a time of mourning. “In my view, it is completely inappropriate to start publicly commenting on this kind of event, especially at a moment of grief,” he stated.

The prime minister added that divisive rhetoric does not benefit Finland, particularly during challenging times. “Wouldn’t it be better to avoid all of this and instead work together to find ways for Finland and Finns to cope, so that everyone can feel safe here?” he asked.

The March fire in Vantaa’s Pähkinärinne neighbourhood killed two adults and their three children; only the family’s infant survived. Controversy later arose when false claims circulated that women had been excluded from the Muslim community’s funeral service.

Members of parliament, including Finns Party’s Kaisa Garedew and National Coalition Party’s Martin Paasi, commented on the issue on social media.
