Danish government introduced car-free Sundays in 1973 due to oil crisis

The Danish government banned private car use on Sundays in 1973 as oil prices soared during the global energy crisis, national broadcaster DR reports.

The measure was part of a broader effort to reduce fuel consumption after oil-producing countries imposed an embargo, causing severe shortages. Authorities restricted driving to essential vehicles only, including emergency services, public transport, and commercial deliveries.

Petrol stations faced long queues, and rationing systems were introduced to manage limited supplies. The car-free Sundays remained in effect for several months until the crisis eased.
