Severe weather prompts evacuations and warnings in Eastern Norway
Severe weather is anticipated on Tuesday afternoon and evening, with intense local rain showers expected in parts of Eastern Norway. There will be significant variations in rainfall intensity, and conditions may change rapidly, accompanied by thunder.
In Bø, Telemark, residents are preparing for the anticipated heavy rainfall. Communication Director Øystein Thoresen from Gjensidige Insurance emphasizes that such extreme precipitation is becoming increasingly common. He advises homeowners with basements to remove valuable items or elevate them, noting that basements often flood during heavy rain. The potential costs for basement flooding can vary significantly, ranging from hundreds to thousands of euros.
Heavy rain has already prompted the evacuation of approximately 350 people from a residential area and two camping sites in Bø. Reports indicate that a house nearly toppled due to excessive rainfall, as local rivers overflow their banks.
Emergency preparedness measures are in place, with authorities recommending that residents ensure drainage systems are clear of debris and vegetation to prevent blockages. Furthermore, a flood warning has been issued for Innlandet, predicting significant rainfall over the coming days, with up to 45mm possible in some areas within a 12-hour period.
Meteorologist Ingvild Villa from the Meteorological Institute reports that weather warnings have been issued for Eastern Norway, indicating the potential for localized heavy showers that may cause difficult driving conditions, urban flooding, and changes to creek and river flows. Residents are urged to stay informed about weather developments and road conditions before traveling.
