Homeowners in Denmark increasingly seek asbestos roof replacements amid new regulations

Homeowners in Denmark are increasingly eager to remove old asbestos roofing. Henrik Holm, a homeowner from Allerød, has arranged to replace his 55-year-old asbestos roof, citing the need to prevent leaks and take advantage of favorable pricing.

Recent regulations have heightened awareness around asbestos handling, prompting homeowners to realize that their roofs may contain asbestos. Many are now contacting contractors to replace their aging roofs. A new law taking effect at the start of the year will require companies to be authorized to demolish asbestos-containing materials, which is expected to drive up costs for such work.

Both the construction industry and trade unions are reporting a surge in demand for asbestos-related tasks. Holm expressed concerns for himself, his neighbors, and the environment, noting visible wear and tear on his roof. He is among many who are preemptively seeking quotes for replacement before the new regulations take effect.

Michelle Nielsen, a communications coordinator, indicated that interest from homeowners has grown significantly. In the first half of 2024, roofing tasks increased by 40% compared to the same period last year, with asbestos-related jobs more than doubling.

Asbestos, banned in the 1980s, remains in many Danish homes and is hazardous when disturbed during renovations. It can release harmful fibers that may cause serious health issues, including lung cancer.

STARK, the country’s largest construction materials retailer, is experiencing a seven-month wait for new orders of corrugated roofing sheets. Customers are pushing for rapid replacements due to uncertainty about future costs associated with the new regulations, which impose strict adherence and potential penalties for non-compliance.
