Costa Rica ranks fourth in global happiness report, surpassing Sweden and Norway
The Central American nation of Costa Rica has surged to fourth place in this year’s World Happiness Report, overtaking countries like Sweden and Norway, according to a report by Finnish broadcaster Yle. The country’s strong social networks, family bonds, and youth well-being are key factors behind its rise.
Costa Rica climbed from 23rd place in 2023 to fourth in the latest rankings, trailing only Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. The report highlights the country’s tight-knit communities, where over 60 percent of the population lives in the Central Valley region, fostering lifelong friendships and neighborly support.
Professor Florencia Quesada Avendano, a Costa Rican-Finnish academic at the University of Helsinki, attributes the country’s happiness to deep family ties. “Family is the core—cousins, aunts, everyone. It gives people security,” she said. Many residents never leave their childhood neighborhoods, maintaining bonds that last decades.
The report also notes Costa Rica’s exceptional youth well-being. Unlike in North America and Western Europe, where young people’s happiness has declined sharply, Costa Rican under-25s report high life satisfaction. Social connections, including strong school communities and family support, act as a buffer against digital harms.
Freedom and self-determination are other key drivers. Costa Rica abolished its military in 1949, redirecting funds to education and healthcare. The country boasts free schools, top regional universities, and a stable democracy. Citizens report high life expectancy and a strong sense of autonomy, which correlates with positive emotions.
Despite challenges like rising inequality and drug-related violence, Costa Ricans maintain a resilient outlook. Quesada Avendano notes that even amid difficulties, “people always smile.” The country’s warm climate—year-round temperatures around 25°C—may also play a role.
Costa Rica’s digital habits differ from Western trends, with platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook favored over passive scrolling apps like TikTok. This emphasis on interactive communication further strengthens social bonds.
