Finland is reversing its planned ban on the surgical castration of piglets, according to a government proposal reported by national broadcaster Yle.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has submitted a bill to parliament to amend the Animal Welfare Act, seeking to remove the prohibition on surgical castration. The ministry states the goal is to safeguard the profitability of domestic pork production.
Under the proposal, local anaesthetics could also be supplied to farms not enrolled in animal health programmes. The ministry argues that a castration ban could significantly impact the competitiveness and export potential of Finnish pork.
The original ban was intended to improve animal welfare standards.
