The city council of Tórshavn will vote Thursday on a proposal to give Faroese wooden boats preferential treatment in the Álaker harbour area, where space has become severely limited, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Under the plan, only Faroese wooden boats and other timber vessels would qualify for free winter storage on land between December 1 and March 30—a period intended for maintenance work such as replacing seams and planks. Plastic boats, which the proposal notes have shorter maintenance cycles than wooden vessels, would not receive the same exemption.

The harbour authority, the harbour committee, and the finance committee have all recommended approving the measure. Some boat owners have reportedly waited up to three months for available space, while others have already moved their boats ashore but cannot launch them again until weather conditions improve.

The city council is expected to address the issue at its meeting today.
