Heavy rainfall triggers landslide warnings and safety advice for campers in northern Iceland
Heavy rainfall has been affecting northern Iceland through the night and into today, leading to reports of landslides away from populated areas. Visitors at campsites in Fjallabyggð have been advised to seek shelter indoors if necessary, as the conditions have been challenging.
The most significant rainfall was recorded in Siglufjörður. There are reports of rising water levels in various locations, with the ground becoming saturated. Experts anticipate that landslide incidents may increase as the weather settles, although the current risk near populated areas is considered low. A mudslide occurred at Reykjaströnd in Skagafjörður, impacting the road, which is currently being cleared by road maintenance crews. People are encouraged to inform the weather authorities if they observe any ground movement.
At the campgrounds in Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður, the number of visitors is relatively low, and weather conditions worsened around noon with increased wind and rain. Puddles have started to form in urban areas of Siglufjörður, while Ólafsfjörður is experiencing slightly wetter conditions.
Most campers are in motorhomes, providing some protection from the weather. However, those in tents—especially those unfamiliar with Icelandic weather—have been advised to take shelter if the situation worsens. Among the visitors are three men from Italy, and local officials have offered them access to communal facilities for warmth and comfort in case conditions become too severe for camping.
Weather warnings remain in effect for the Strandir and Northwestern regions until 15:00 and for Eastern North Iceland until 18:00.
