More than 400 people in Iceland are now relying on food banks, the highest number ever recorded, according to a report by national broadcaster RÚV. The surge reflects growing financial strain amid rising living costs.

The Icelandic Red Cross, which operates the largest network of food assistance programmes, confirmed the increase. “We’ve never seen numbers this high,” said a spokesperson. “Many are working families who simply can’t make ends meet.”

Economic pressures, including inflation and housing shortages, have pushed more households toward food aid. The government has yet to announce additional support measures.
