The Moldovan government is exploring whether Denmark’s waste sorting model could help reduce the country’s reliance on multiple trash bins, according to a report by Danish broadcaster DR.

A delegation from Moldova visited a Danish waste sorting facility to assess whether a single-bin system—where waste is sorted centrally rather than by households—could work in their country. The move follows complaints from Moldovan citizens about the complexity of separating waste into multiple categories.

Danish waste management relies on advanced sorting technology, allowing residents to dispose of most waste in one container. The system then separates recyclables, organic waste, and residual trash mechanically.

Moldova currently requires households to sort waste into several bins, a practice that has faced resistance due to its perceived inconvenience. The government is now evaluating whether adopting a Danish-style approach could improve compliance while maintaining recycling rates.
