Independence Party retains control in Kópavogur with minor changes

The Independence Party remains the largest political force in Kópavogur following local elections, though its representation on the town council has slightly decreased.

According to preliminary results, the party secured 36.3% of the vote, down from 38.5% in the previous election. This translates to five seats on the nine-member council, a reduction of one seat.

The Progressive Party saw a modest gain, increasing its share to 18.8% (up from 16.9%) and retaining two council seats. The Social Democratic Alliance also held steady with two seats, despite a slight drop in support to 15.2%.

Newcomer party F—Framtíðin (Future) entered the council for the first time, winning one seat with 10.1% of the vote. The Left-Green Movement lost its sole seat after its support fell to 7.4%.

Voter turnout in Kópavogur, Iceland’s second-largest municipality, was 78.9%, slightly lower than the national average of 80.2%.
