Faroese independence party warns of population decline ahead of election

The Faroese Independence Party (Sjálvstýri) has warned that the Faroe Islands faces major demographic challenges, saying the country “will miss its people” if current trends continue.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 2026 Faroese parliamentary election, party representatives argued that significant changes are needed to address depopulation. The event was held in Tórshavn on March 13, with party leader Lasse Klein and other officials present.

The Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has seen rural outmigration and an aging population in recent years. Sjálvstýri has previously advocated for greater self-governance and policies to reverse population decline, including incentives for young families and rural development.

The party’s remarks come as campaigning intensifies for the upcoming Løgting (Faroese Parliament) election, where economic sustainability and demographic issues are expected to be key topics.
