Yellow weather warning issued for heavy rain and flooding in eastern Norway
The Meteorological Institute has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across much of Eastern Norway starting Monday afternoon, predicting locally severe rain showers. Additionally, warnings for flooding have been issued in northern Innlandet, along with alerts for landslides and flash flooding, categorized at a yellow level, indicating a moderate risk.
Per Egil Haga, the duty meteorologist, states that areas within the warning zone may experience rainfall of 40 to 50 millimeters throughout the afternoon. This weather may lead to traffic disruptions, including water accumulation and road closures. Drivers are advised to navigate according to current conditions and to monitor road updates.
Meteorologists also report that water levels in streams and small rivers will rise rapidly, and caution is advised near these waterways. Kristian Nordtun from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate warns that while major rivers are not expected to flood, there will be a significant increase in water flow in smaller waterways that may have had low levels just days prior.
Both the Water Resources and Energy Directorate and the Meteorological Institute highlight that local variations in rain intensity are likely, and conditions may change quickly. The most intense rainfall is expected later in the afternoon, moving slightly eastward in the evening, leading to drier conditions in areas like Valdres and parts of Gudbrandsdalen.
By Tuesday, more distinct heavy rain showers are anticipated, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours, potentially bringing localized downpours exceeding 20 or even 25 millimeters in short bursts, along with thunder and lightning. This upcoming weather may pose challenges similar to today’s conditions, with heightened local impacts expected.
