Southernmost Faroese municipalities consider merger

Residents of Suðuroy, the southernmost island of the Faroe Islands, have expressed support for merging the island’s municipalities into one. The consensus emerged during a public meeting in the village of Saltangará earlier this week.

The proposal aims to address long-standing disagreements between the island’s communities, which have hindered broader cooperation. While many residents now believe that merging the municipalities should be done legally, political opinions on the matter remain divided.

Three local politicians shared their views during a live blog on the public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya’s website. Erhard Joensen of the Union Party stated that he did not want to force a merger. Dennis Holm of the Republic Party also expressed opposition to a legal merger. In contrast, Jóhan M. Stenberg argued that the municipalities should indeed be merged, although he did not specify how this should be done legally.
