Ulvila’s Inka Tiainen, a 20-year-old weightlifter, has won the national championship with record-breaking performances, showcasing her dedication and hard work in the sport.

Tiainen secured gold at the Finnish Championships in Tampere two weeks ago, competing in the 69 kg weight class. She set personal records in both the snatch (93 kg) and clean & jerk (120 kg), winning the national title. Her coach, Juha Mikkola, expected the victory but was surprised by her record-breaking lifts. “Inka wanted to lift more than what I suggested. As a coach, I couldn’t ask for more in that situation,” Mikkola said.

The Finnish Weightlifting Federation’s development manager, Jarno Fabritius, praised Tiainen, calling her a coach’s dream. “She is the first to arrive at the gym and the last to leave. She helps others and does everything as well as possible,” Fabritius said.

Weightlifting is experiencing a surge in popularity, particularly among young women. The number of registered female competitors under 18 has increased significantly, with 174 girls competing last year compared to just 125 in 2018. Fabritius attributes this growth to the evolving perception of women in society. “It’s now acceptable for women to display strength,” he said.

Tiainen’s foundation in gymnastics has been instrumental in her weightlifting success. She currently focuses entirely on her athletic career, living with her parents and not pursuing studies or work. “I have optimal conditions right now, as I can concentrate solely on sports,” Tiainen stated.
