Danish military fired shots during drone panic

The Danish military has confirmed for the first time that it fired shots into the air during a drone panic last year, while a civilian aircraft was in the vicinity. However, the military has yet to provide answers to key questions surrounding the incident.

The incident occurred on September 28, 2025, when an unknown drone was reportedly seen near Borris Shooting Range. The drone was described as having a propeller and emitting a white/green light. Several shots were fired by soldiers at the shooting range, using small-caliber ammunition typically used in standard military rifles.

The military has not confirmed whether the shots hit the drone or not. The incident occurred while a civilian propeller plane from the airline Widerøe was en route from Bergen to Billund Airport, approximately 30 kilometers south of Borris Shooting Range. The plane was flying at an altitude of over two kilometers, and an internal military investigation concluded that there was no risk of the shots reaching the aircraft.

The military has not provided information on whether there were other shooting incidents during the same period. However, it has been reported that the military refused to fly over its own areas during this time, suggesting concerns about the ability to distinguish between drones and other objects.

The military’s evaluation of the incident, which was initially scheduled for late February, has been postponed indefinitely, raising questions about the military’s preparedness for hybrid attacks and the handling of the drone panic.
