Authorities conclude investigation into criminal organization leader linked to drug smuggling between Sweden and Finland
Authorities in Finland have completed a preliminary investigation concerning the leader of a criminal organization based in Sweden. Earlier this fall, police announced an investigation focused on the smuggling of narcotics from Sweden to Finland, with these offenses occurring between autumn 2023 and spring 2024.
Initially, eight individuals were suspected in connection to the case. This autumn, the District Court of Helsinki handed down sentences ranging from 7 to 11 years to those involved for serious drug-related crimes.
The completed investigation now sheds light on the involvement of the organization’s leader, who is accused of orchestrating the smuggling of amphetamines into Finland in two separate shipments between December 2023 and April 2024. This individual was apprehended in Denmark at the end of September 2024 based on a European Arrest Warrant and has since been extradited to Finland.
Matti Rekola, a detective chief inspector from the National Police, praised the cooperative efforts across Nordic countries. He noted that despite the international dimensions of the case, all suspects linked to the importation of drugs have been processed in Finland. With the accused already sentenced, the investigation regarding the organization’s leader will now move to the indictment phase.
