Power restoration efforts continue in Mýrdal after electricity lines were damaged during significant flooding. Residents are currently urged to conserve electricity as a temporary power supply is being utilized until repairs can be made to the affected Víkurstreng line, which lies beneath the Skógá river.

Yesterday morning, it became apparent that the power outage occurred due to the flooding of the Skógá, which overflowed its banks. Following the incident, power was restored to residents by around 7 AM after an extensive blackout. Given the ongoing mild temperatures and melting snow, the exact timeline for when the repair work can commence remains unclear.

RARIK has developed a contingency plan aimed at repairing the line as soon as conditions allow. However, the situation on the ground remains challenging, and ensuring the safety of repair crews is a top priority before any work can begin.

As the community grapples with these issues, residents are reminded to use electricity sparingly to avoid overwhelming the backup supply, which may fail if there’s a sudden spike in demand.
