Travel demand surges ahead of Christmas holidays in Finland

The festive season travel tickets are currently in high demand, with expectations that this year’s Christmas holidays, falling mid-week, will lead to a more even distribution of traffic across several days. The busiest days for travel are anticipated to be Friday, December 20, and Monday, December 23. However, this year’s travel rush is expected to spread out over more days.

In train transportation, Friday is predicted to be the peak day for travelers. Many people will still be working on Christmas Eve, which means there will be a busy flow of passengers extending into the evening. The availability of seats is influenced by departure times, with some trips being more popular than others, according to a transportation executive.

As for overnight trains to Lapland, bookings are filling up quickly. The most in-demand departures are likely to sell out soon.

Traveling families looking to secure adjacent seats are advised to purchase tickets promptly, noting that demand largely depends on the destination within Finland, with northern routes being especially popular. Pricing is influenced by demand, and the Christmas season is recognized as peak travel time. However, being flexible with departure dates or times could lead to finding more affordable tickets.

In bus transportation, tickets continue to sell out as the holidays approach. Demand for bus services appears to be on par with last year, but there is still plenty of availability for journeys in the lead-up to Christmas. Bus tickets are increasingly being bought at the last minute, leading to higher chances of sold-out services as Christmas nears. The anticipation is that Friday will similarly be the busiest travel day for buses, mirroring trends seen in train services.
