Residents in Denmark face rising alcohol-related issues prompting debate over proposed sales restrictions

A recent report indicates that approximately 402,000 residents in Denmark are experiencing moderate alcohol-related issues, while around 67,000 display signs of severe alcohol problems. In response to these concerning statistics, medical professionals are advocating for stricter regulations regarding alcohol sales. One proposed measure includes prohibiting the sale of alcohol in stores after 10 PM.

The brewery association, however, does not support this initiative. They recognize the detrimental impact alcohol can have on lives but also highlight the positive aspects of beer, such as the joy and camaraderie it can foster, according to Nick Hækkerup, the association’s lobbyist and director.

Hækkerup argues against making alcohol less accessible, suggesting that efforts should instead focus on helping those already facing difficulties with alcohol consumption. He emphasizes the importance of targeted initiatives for individuals struggling with these issues.

On the other hand, Camilla Rathcke, president of the medical association, believes it is essential to challenge the drinking culture in Denmark. She has put forward nine initiatives aimed at limiting alcohol availability and promoting alcohol-free social environments.

Rathcke points out that reliance on alcohol for enjoyment and celebration is problematic. She argues that if an adult finds it difficult to refrain from purchasing alcohol after 10 PM, it may indicate a deeper issue with alcohol dependency.

The discussion around these proposals has sparked a debate among various political parties, with differing views on the best approach to tackle alcohol-related problems in Denmark.
