Icelandair has reached a significant milestone in its history with the arrival of its first Airbus aircraft. Named Esja, this A321 LR model landed in Keflavik, marking a departure from the airline’s long-standing exclusive use of Boeing planes for international flights.

For decades, Icelandair, along with its predecessor Flugleiðir, operated solely with Boeing aircraft. The introduction of the Airbus fleet will replace the aging Boeing 757s, which are set to be retired from service by 2027. The airline plans to add four Airbus planes this winter, with three more expected in 2026.

Icelandair’s CEO, Bogi Nils Bogason, expressed optimism about the new aircraft’s impact, highlighting their improved fuel efficiency and potential for enhancing operational effectiveness. The Airbus planes are anticipated to significantly contribute to a more sustainable and cost-effective future for the airline.
