Citizen initiative gains support for nicotine pouch ban in Denmark
A citizen initiative aims to ban the purchase, sale, and production of nicotine pouches, having recently gained over 50,000 supporters, allowing it to be submitted for official debate in parliament. Proposed by Tinna Schütz Larsen from Hedensted, she expressed her enthusiasm for the support received, emphasizing the need to give a voice to animals, particularly dogs.
Larsen’s concern stems from witnessing the severe consequences nicotine pouches have on dogs that ingest them. She voiced her distress over the tragic deaths of pets due to this issue, describing it as a horrific fate.
While advocating for legislative action, she also expressed skepticism that merely encouraging responsible disposal of such items would suffice. She hopes lawmakers will embrace the citizen proposal and take action against the problem.
However, not everyone agrees with the ban. Lukas Jensen, met while walking in Vejle, uses nicotine pouches himself and expressed ambivalence about the proposed prohibition. He understands the rationale for a ban but believes that education on proper disposal is more effective than an outright ban.
Veterinarian Simon Vølund, who manages a local animal hospital, sees value in the proposal as a means to highlight the issue. He feels that while nicotine products pose a significant risk in human contexts, the danger to pets is also growing. Despite acknowledging the rising problem of nicotine poisoning in dogs, he doubts that legislation can effectively curb it. He encourages a collective responsibility towards our environment and pets, advocating against littering and promoting care for nature.
