Finnish President Alexander Stubb is currently on his inaugural regional visit as president, taking place in Central Finland. During his trip, he addressed the media in Jyväskylä after meeting with citizens at the University of Jyväskylä’s library.

At this public event, President Stubb was interviewed by the chairperson of the university’s student union, who noted that he preferred not to see questions in advance and imposed no restrictions on topics. Reflecting on his long-standing connection to Jyväskylä, Stubb shared that he first visited the city in 1989 and has often returned due to sports engagements.

Throughout the event, attended by numerous students, Stubb expressed a message of hope amidst challenging times, emphasizing that history may not repeat itself if society actively participates in shaping its course. He cautioned against excessive dramatization and expressed disdain for the Finnish saying that “a pessimist will not be disappointed,” stating that pessimists often achieve little because of a belief that they cannot influence outcomes.

Meanwhile, some students at the event voiced their opinions regarding the Middle Eastern conflict, holding placards calling for a boycott of Israel. The gathering attracted interest, with attendees arriving well before doors opened, although the turnout fell short of the venue’s 750-person capacity, reaching just under 500.

Following the public meeting, many enjoyed the opportunity to take photos with the president, despite the limited time for individual inquiries. Later in the day, President Stubb is scheduled to deliver a memorial lecture at the university in honor of Martti J. Kari, focusing on his contributions to security and strategic analysis.
