A volcanic eruption near the Sundhnúksgígar is producing gas emissions that may spread from the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to Hellu today. Meteorologists anticipate a westward wind, which could disperse the volcanic pollution to the east. A natural disaster expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office notes that the extent of the gas concentration remains uncertain, especially since the eruption is currently not very vigorous.

According to forecasts, the impact area of the gas emissions includes the southern part of Snæfellsnes. The staff at the Meteorological Office will monitor the dispersion of gas throughout the day as part of their ongoing surveillance. The current gas dispersion forecast indicates that pollutants are moving northward this morning, with a change in wind direction expected in the afternoon, leading to a shift in gas distribution.

This morning, the Meteorological Office reported that there had been little to no change in the eruption overnight, with lava flow primarily directed towards the east and southeast, while the advance at the edges remains slow. Gas emissions from the eruption are a key element in today’s environmental monitoring efforts.

Further updates on the gas distribution can be found on the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s website. As authorities continue to assess the situation, they emphasize the importance of vigilance in light of the volcanic activity.
