Police intervened at the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen today after three individuals poured a paint-like substance onto a piece of artwork. The suspects, all in their mid-20s, have been detained and charged with vandalism, although they will not face a preliminary hearing.

The incident was reported around 12:30 PM. A climate activist group, known as “Emergency Brake,” has claimed responsibility, stating that they targeted the painting “Woman in a Chemise” by French artist André Derain, created in 1906. The artwork was protected behind glass.

The gallery has been approached for a statement regarding the incident, and no response has been received yet.

Denmark’s Minister of Culture expressed his disapproval on social media, criticizing the actions of the protesters. He remarked that while the climate crisis is a pressing issue, defacing cultural heritage with industrial paint does not contribute positively to the cause. The minister expressed hope that the painting remains intact despite the incident.
