Being a member of the Icelandic Parliament, or Alþingi, is far from an easy desk job, according to outgoing legislators. Several former MPs shared insights about the challenges faced during their tenure, providing advice to those who will soon assume their positions.

Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir, a former MP from the Left-Green Movement, emphasized that substantial commitment is necessary for anyone wishing to engage meaningfully in political matters. “You have to put in effort to stay informed if you want to contribute constructively,” she remarked.

Tómas Tómasson, leaving his role as an MP for the People’s Party, noted the changes in seating comfort, pointing out that the new chairs are significantly more accommodating compared to the old ones, which had a tendency to be uncomfortable. “The new chairs are truly designed for comfort, making it easy to nod off,” he humorously commented.

The conversation touched on various aspects of parliamentary life, including the rigorous nature of legislative work that goes beyond mere financial compensation, a misconception often associated with such positions. Outgoing members conveyed that the political landscape is demanding, requiring diligence and a proactive mindset.

In a nutshell, the transition is not only about assuming new roles but about understanding the depth of responsibility that comes with them. New MPs are encouraged to prepare for the realities of parliamentary duties as they embark on their political journeys.
