Investigations reveal deepfake controversies linked to Amy Wang and misleading Mars videos
This week, a series of investigations uncovered concerns over misleading videos and images circulating online. One report questioned whether a Norwegian fishing vessel had captured a submarine, while another examined claims about images supposedly originating from Mars.
A viewer highlighted a video about Mars that seemed too good to be true, prompting skepticism due to the lack of verification through official NASA channels. Investigations revealed a mixture of true and deceptive claims regarding Mars imagery, but one major detail went largely unnoticed: the woman featured in the video was a deepfake.
The digital trail traced back to Amy Wang, a content creator on YouTube. She confirmed she had never made the statements attributed to her in the video. Manipulation of her mouth movements and voice replacements were evident. Amy expressed concern about the implications of using AI for creating deepfake content, emphasizing how it could distort reality and affect personal reputations.
Despite the Mars video garnering over 14.7 million views, it mysteriously vanished after a few days. Investigations also found that an account on TikTok continued to post Mars-related content featuring Amy’s likeness, amassing more than 240,000 followers in a short span.
Efforts to trace the origins of the images were thorough, employing various search engines. Findings included the realization that some images had previously appeared in NASA’s archives. The case underscores growing concerns about deepfakes and the impact they can have on public perception and trust in online information.
